SBC Communications just announced what amounts to a rescue plan worth hundreds of millions of dollars for an Israeli company (Amdocs). See
story from Haaretz and from business wires below.

SBC (www.sbc.com) operates local Bell and many other services including yellow pages in 13 states. Write to them to indicate your displeasure at their decision (bad for business, bad for people). If you use any of their services, you may want to discontinue and let them know why you are discontinuing (remember what really changed Apartheid South Africa was such economic pressure). Amdocs wins SBC contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars By TheMarker and Ha'aretz Service

Amdocs (NYSE: DOX) announced Friday that it has won a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars with the U.S. company SBC Services [sic].

According to Amdocs, the agreement calls for the billing and customer-care software giant to provide services for the computer systems of SBC companies over a period of seven years.

"This contact changes the picture for Amdocs," financial analyst Tzachi Rodnick said. According to Rodnick, Amdocs could already see some 30 percent of the revenues from the contract in 2003.

At the end of 2002, Amdocs reported revenues of $355.5 million for the fiscal third quarter, down 6.5 percent from the second quarter. Amdocs said its operating loss reached $25.4 million, including one-time charges. Its net loss was $9 million, or 4 cents per share.

That same month, Amdocs announced deployment of its billing solution at Tess, a Brazilian cellular communications company serving 1.1 million users. One analyst estimated that the contract was a relatively minor one, worth about $10 million.

In November, Amdocs announced a second wave of job cuts, in which 400 people were sent home. During 2002, Amdocs dismissed 1,400 employees,
leaving it with about 8,500 on its payroll. Market sources don't think that's the end of the story. More job cuts will probably be inevitable in 2003, they say.

Amdocs/SBC Services -2: For Key Computer Sys Improvements Dow Jones, Friday, January 10, 2003 at 09:19

ST. LOUIS -- Amdocs Ltd. (DOX) signed a seven-year outsourcing agreement with SBC Communications Inc. (SBC) to modernize the information-technology systems of its directory operations.

The deal is worth"hundreds of millions of dollars,"said Amdocs, a provider of customer-care and billing systems, in a press release Friday.

Amdocs will provide key computer systems improvements and maintenance for the SBC directory companies, which publish SBC SMART Yellow Pages in 13 states.

Under the agreement, SBC's directory units will gain performance and cost efficiencies through the outsourcing of services, consolidation, and modernization of their systems into a single integrated system; and the transitioning of those units' IT work forces to Amdocs.

Last month, the companies said they were negotiating a multiple-year contract, saying details would be provided if and when the deal was finalized by both parties.

As reported Nov. 14, SBC Communications lowered its stake in Amdocs to 10.1%, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. SBC held 21.8 million Amdocs common shares after selling two million shares earlier this year. Prior to that sale, SBC held an 11.1%
stake. Previously, SBC's stake in Amdocs was as large as 16.3%.
