Coop stands for about 25 percent of all wholesale grocery purchasing in Norway. Managing Director Bernt Aas hopes his boycott will spread to all Coop stores throughout the Nordic countries.

“The board in Coop Norge is upset over Israel’s conduct in the Middle East,” Aas told newspaper Dagsavisen. “It is our view that Israel’s behaviour should result in consequences regarding our purchasing.”

Israel is a major exporter of produce, with much of the celery, avocados, oranges and other fruits and vegetables in Norwegian stores coming from the country at this time of year.

Aas said the Coop Norge board “ will take the initiative” to urge its Swedish and Danish counterparts to launch a Nordic boycott as well.

Aas was quick to point out that the boycott won’t have any great economic impact, but is mostly symbolic. The boycott has generated support from some of Norway’s socialist political parties, including the Socialist Left, and from some labor unions.
